District Institute of Education and Training Chandel, Manipur is the only existing teacher training institute in the district which was established in 2002.The first In-service teacher training of six months Condensed Course Certificate in Elementary Teacher Education (C.E.T.Ed) was started in the year 2003.The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) recognised DIET Chandel and seven other DIETs of Manipur to impart Elementary Teacher Education (ETE) in 2005.The nomenclature of elementary teacher education was changed to Diploma in Elementary Education with the official notification of NCTE in 2014.The first Elementary Teacher Education (ETE) Pre-service teacher Course of 2 years duration was introduced in 2006 with intake capacity of 50 seats per academic session.
DIET Chandel aims to prepare teachers for the elementary stage of education i.e class I-VIII. The present total strength of staff of DIET Chandel including principal is 31. Out of these, 12 are teaching staff and the rest are non-teaching staff.The institute has so far trained 229 future elementary teachers and 472 In-service elementary teachers through regular and distance mode. 97 (ninety seven) In-service Teacher-Trainees are undergoing two-year Diploma in Elementary Education ( D.El.Ed ) under NIOS. Presently, there are 44 first year and 38 2nd year D.El.Ed (Pre-service) Teacher-trainees pursuing training.
